Gender and Sexualiy in Italian Community of Vancouver - Personal Statement Example degree in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia, where I am currently completing the International Graduate Study Preparation Program (IGSPP). My educational background has provided the theoretical framework for a career in anthropology through the Bachelor Degree in Cultural Anthropology (Major in Faculty of Arts) secured from the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy, from September 2004 to July 2007. Due to the immense interest and orientation to different aspects of culture and society that exhibit patterned interrelationships and trends, I delved into a Master’s Degree in Methodology of Research in Anthropology (Major in Faculty of Arts) from theUniversity of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy, from September 2007 to April 2010. During these academic experiences, I was given the opportunity to visit other universities as part of the exchange student programs. I have travelled and shared educational experiences with students from the Universidad Aut onoma de Madrid and the University of Technology of Sydney (UTS). The rich and varied exposure to diverse people, places, and cultures with utterly multifarious facets and orientations has prepared me to embrace an open-minded stance in understanding anthropology as an integrative interdisciplinary field of endeavor. As clearly depicted in the University of Florida’s published discourse about anthropology, I recognized the profession â€Å"with its holistic perspective, (that) intersects the multiple approaches to the study of humankind – biological, social, cultural, historical, linguistic, cognitive, material, technological, affective, and aesthetic† (University of Florida, n.d., pp. 1-2). Having personally experienced living in various countries, such as Italy, Australia, the UK, and Canada, the desire to learn more about the four major anthropological fields (archaeological, biological, linguistic, and socio-cultural anthropology) kept my interest aflame. As initially propelled by the impetus to pursue the Ph.D. program in Anthropology, my research on â€Å"Shifting Perceptions of Gender, Sexuality and Identity among Italian Immigrants in Vancouver† led me to identify my research aim to explore the shifting perceptions on issues of gender, sexuality and identity these young people may have in contrast to the earlier generations. Through the research, appropriate investigations are proposed to be made to address whether younger Italians might be affected with limiting and more conservative views on issues of gender roles and sexual identities. Attached is a copy of the Doctoral Research Prospectus for the admission committee’s perusal. The successful completion of this research would highly depend on the University of British Columbia’s approval of one’s application. I am very much interested to pursue the program as part of my long term commitment to be an instrumental contributor to improving the lives of c ontemporary generation through a determination of significant factors that affect human existence across a global scale. In our case with the career assessment, during the period of the three months, while the testing was taking place, it is assumed that it is hardly possible for the objects of the research to significantly improve their knowledge and qualification to the extent which could possibly change the results of the test, not noting the three respondents who visited the courses and have been excluded from the test group for this reason. Gonzalo states: "We are people of our own minds and no one else's," by this Gonzalo is telling everyone that no one can control what someone sees or does. This is true unless one is using magic to alter the minds and reality of anyone under the influence of magic. In the Tempest, by William Shakespeare, Prospero uses magic to alter the reality and delude the minds of characters. Love or guilt is a form of magic that naturally occurs in one's life. Prospero creates another magic that is placed in the audience's mind when he asks them to become the master magicians. Alonso and Gonzalo's minds are deluded by Prospero's spells to make them unaware of what is happening around them or aware of something out of the ordinary, and Caliban is affected by Prospero's spells physically. Gonzalo sees the things happening around him through a new prespective because of the spell that makes him see everything in a good light. Because of this spell Gonzalo states that their clothes are better than new, and that they are not stained with salt water. Gonzalo also brings up that the island is in excellent shape and is adequate for living on. Antonio and Sebastian tell Gonzalo he is lying about the clothes and the island being in such fantastic shape. They tell him this because they are not affected by the spell that Gonzalo is under. Spells don't always affect a person directly, but it still makes a person see their reality in a different perspective. Alonso is fooled by Prospero's magic too, but it is not directly aimed towards Alonso. Because of the magic that put Ferdinand in a glen where no one could see him; Alonso thinks that Ferdinand drowned at sea. Alonso thinks that Ferdinand is dead because no one saw Ferdinand make it to land safe. This is because Prospero used magic directly on Ferdinand, but not directly on Alonso. Alonso is in a bad mood because of this indirect magic for an entire act because Alonso's crew couldn't find Ferdinand. Meanwhile Ferdinand is following strange music that is leading him away from the others. Prospero has Ferdinand walk away from the others so he meets Miranda, and also so Alonso's crew can't find Ferdinand. This shows some of the powers of indirect magic, but direct magic can be more effective when trying to accomplish something very quickly; such as punishment or trying to teach somebody a lesson. Prospero casts spells on... ...ero tells the audience that they are making him real in their minds now and are becoming part of the play. Now the audience has total control to send Prospero back to Naples or keep him on the island. Prospero tells the audience all of this to make them see the world through his eyes. Without telling the audience these final words they would have never thought about making Prospero real in their minds. When they make Prospero real in their minds, they can live the life of Prospero on the island or in Naples. It is up to the audience where he is to go and what life he lives, this is the magic of the play. Magic can alter the reality and perspective how one looks at life. In the Tempest, Prospero has the ability to cast spells that alter one's perspective of reality. One may say that reality is intangible, but one can grasp the concept of what is stands for. Magic can throw that concept away. If one sees magic in progress it will alter the true vision of reality. Whenever magic verses reality a group can not describe what the feel or see. The concept of magic and reality is different to everyone. Reality or magic, they're both what one makes them to be.

Electronic Publishing: The future of the media industry? It all depends on whom you talk to, because everyone has their opinion. Some people feel that this industry is a flash in the pan, but others feel quite differently. The Internet is expanding second by second and the information that is on this medium is astounding. Newspapers and magazines have jumped into a type of publishing called internet publishing, or electronic publishing, in which the Internet becomes the primary place to find information about the particular company. Organizations like Syracuse Online have used this type of publishing and grabbed a much different quality of audience than the print version of the Syracuse Post-Standard. Electronic publishing brings information to the user instantly, with minute-by-minute updates of news stories, sports scores and special events. Like no other form of media, electronic publishing uses new technology unique only to the Internet, in order to enhance the experience of the user online. Java applets and scripts, Macromedia Shockwa ve programs, RealAudio broadcasts, free e-mail newsletters, live video webcasts and interactive chat are some of the ways in which electronic publishers can translate basic text into exciting, moving media applications. Syracuse Online has taken advantage of these new media on the Internet and has changed the way in which Central New Yorkers view their web site. There are problems with change that skeptics of the Internet have. One problem is that information changes so quickly sometimes, that new information mounted on a web site five minutes ago, might not be read because something has just changed. So, in their opinion, why would you write an article or record a sound bite that won't be ... ...s made that even more possible. The issues that I have raised are just a handful of what is being talked about with regards to electronic publishing. Electronic publishing will continue to grow with the Internet. As more people discover the power of electronic publishing to reach out to people, the medium will grow exponentially. The future is very bright for the Internet and for electronic publishing. This Is My Most Important Event in My Life

A Significant Event I think in a human life, everyone has a significant event that they can't forget. Mine is a poignant farewell party where I said good-bye to my family, my relatives, and my friends. Everyone was laughing and telling funny stories, but I wanted to be alone. I sat on the roof of my house and looked at the stars. It was very hard to leave. I knew I loved them so much and I didn’t truly want to go to the U. S. ; however, I decided I must go and make my own future. I realized that this was my chance to build my career which would benefit me and my family. It was an emotional evening.I will always remember it. It was a lovely day with a sunny morning, a cloudy afternoon, and a windy evening. That morning, I went to the America Embassy for an appointment with the delegate for an interview to receive my F-1 Visa. Maybe it was my lucky day. There were many people who wanted to get a Visa that day. I had waited more than three hours in the waiting room for my turn. I was nervous about what he would ask me. But the interview was easier than I thought. I passed it with a smile on my face. When my father knew I had passed the interview, he was really happy.He told me he would organize a big farewell party for me, and he did it. He invited all of our relatives and friends. Then we prepared everything for the upcoming party together. When all of us were in my house, we separated two groups. One went to market to buy food and beverages. Another group went to the bakery to buy a big farewell cake. We attended the farewell party with a happy atmosphere. During the evening, we took photos and sang the songs we loved. We had a feast with a diverse menu, which included appetizers, main dishes and the desserts. We were joking while we were cooking and eating.The meal was good, but I really enjoyed our affection for each other. After the dinner, we went to the living room to continue the party with playing cards and video games. After a while, my grandpa be gan telling us some his legend tales. Step by step, everybody told many funny stories that made me laugh too much. I knew everyone was sad that I would be leaving, but they still celebrated because they loved me. I realized it, and I laughed with them because I didn’t want them worry about me. On the other hand, I still wanted to be alone so that I could think about many things.I didn’t even know what I was thinking about. I just wanted to find a quiet space so that I could feel peaceful in my mind. I climbed up, sat on the roof and looked at the stars on the sky. Some thought started appearing in my mind. I knew when I left my country; my parents would be sad and worry about me. I thought about my younger brother, who was still a teenager and hoped he would start studying hard and listening to what my parents said. I was also concerned that I would not see my grandparents anymore because they were very old. I knew I would miss my aunts and uncles also.I thought about my friends and all the good time we’d had together. We still had many plans to perform together. Furthermore, I thought about my future. I might perceive and experience more things in the other culture. In addition, I was able to improve my English skill in listening as speaking. This was my opportunity in order to build my career according to my plan; this also was my chance so that I could found my own company. Otherwise, I would be independent. I imagined that how many troubles I would meet. Not only I didn’t scare, but I also felt interesting.I would figure them out and handled by myself. There were some reasons motivate me that I should left Vietnam to the U. S. That really was my significant event; the first time I seriously thought about a lot of things in one night. And now I realize I have matured more since I came here. I’m becoming a man. I may solve many problems as well as I know how to take care of myself. Nonetheless, I still miss my parents, my a ll relatives. I always want to graduate the University as fast as I can so that I could come back my country and visit all of them.

Leadership and Management Development Essays Leadership and Management Development Essay Leadership and Management Development Essay Leadership and Management Development Name: Institution: LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT Introduction Leadership and Management development are important in the successful operation of any organization. This report details several items on my agenda as the new Management and Development programs Director at the NSCA. First, this report will highlight the framework that I will adopt in the new position. It will also suggest the policies I will implement in my new capacity. The report will identify processes crucial for the NSCA’s success, as well. Finally, this report will identify a few programs that this office shall commence. All the strategies that identified in this report are to ensure that the NSCA has the right management, workforce and enough resources, to ensure effective operation. 1.) Leadership Framework A leadership framework dictates that leadership should not be limited to personnel holding traditional leader or management roles. It also states that leadership in an organization is most effective when we divide responsibilities in service delivery. At the NSCA, any staffer can therefore provide leadership. This statement holds for as long as they illustrate appropriate mannerisms. Such mannerisms are empowering the leadership levels of fellow staffers and significant contributions to the leadership process (Hargreaves Fink, 2006). For effective implementation of the leadership framework in this organization, several changes are required. For starters, the workforce needs restructuring. It is my recommendation that; first, personnel be divided into several teams. At the helm will be a team leader/ supervisor. The team leader’s responsibilities include; providing clear direction to the team, allocating work to team members and resolving conflicts within the team satisfactorily. They will also be required to provide the team and its members with a supportive and inclusive environment. Above the team leaders, Managers will be in charge. The managers will have various roles as well. A few are; delegating responsibilities to the team leaders, monitoring team performance and taking necessary action, supporting the teams create and maintain team values, and developing the staff below them. It is my recommendation for the placing of Senior Managers above Managers at the NSCA. This hierarchy will be necessary in limiting overlapping responsibilities. The proposed Senior Managers should hold several responsibilities. First, they should communicate the departmental objectives to the staff and teams below them. They should monitor and review performance of managers and staff under them. Finally, they should be able to act as mentors to the staff. In this role, they will provide specialist guidance and support to the respective department (Steers, Sanchez-Runde Nardon, 2010). At the helm of each department, it is my recommendation that a Director takes charge. Such leaders are ‘Strategic Managers.’ Their main role will be providing effective leadership in their areas of responsibility. They will also be required to create and announce the strategic direction for their areas of jurisdiction. In the organization, they should be able to promote an environment where diversity is highly valued. Strategic managers will be finally required to act as mentors to staff under their leadership. The leadership model identified above describes a distributed or shared model. Everyone in the NSCA has the opportunity to contribute to the leadership process, without necessarily being a leader. This is through the responsibilities described in the Leadership Framework. 2.) Leadership Management Policies The purpose of leadership is to develop vision, commitment, and embracing innovation among staff. Management, on the other hand, develops systems that improve consistency and predictability in service delivery. Effective leadership and management are important due to a variety of factors. First, they enable the organization to carry out its national priorities, successfully. Secondly, they provide learning environments for staff. Such communities are typically safe, ambitious and active. Effective leadership and management enable the organization in developing changes and improvements necessary for perfecting it. Lastly, they enable staff to provide excellent service consistently. The aforementioned policy statement results into several important principles. The first is promotion of leadership at all Organisational levels. This will widen the existing range of experiences and skills, existing in the organization, to all staff. The next principle dictates that; the NSCA will provide a framework for efficient and sustained support in leadership and management to all staff and teams. The organization shall strive to provide a program of support in leadership and management. The aforementioned program requires placing in a structure; understood and implemented by all staff. The prospective Leadership and Management policy ha several outcomes expected out of it. Leaders and managers working within legal, financial and national influences, have several things expected out of them. They are required to uphold and support the strategic vision, values and aims of the National Civil Service Agency (NSCA). They should embrace and grow the team approach, structured into service delivery. Finally, they will be required to nurture sustained development and improvement of staff and the services provided to the Public. To ensure that implementation of the aforementioned statements, each member of staff at the NSCA has responsibilities. These responsibilities are employee responsibilities and managerial responsibilities. Employees have a duty to perform in a professional manner, uphold the Leadership and Management policy statement and to recognize, respect and uphold individual roles and duties in the organization. Managers also have responsibilities to carry out: they will be required to appropriately listen to their employees and peers and act effectively. Managers are required to promote the participation of teams and their members in developmental activities. Finally, they are required to provide direction to the teams under their leadership. 3.) Leadership processes. There are two key leadership processes in existence. For the NSCA’s effectiveness in service delivery, delivery of both needs implementation without fail. The leadership processes include management and vision. Vision describes where leadership begins. It is an image of the future desired by the organization. In short, vision guides the organization’s progress. Management describes the ability to implement objectives, by planning, organizing and effectively employing resources. Management is associated with prudence and preserving limited resources. Managers lacking vision may limit innovation in the organization, while, leaders lacking managerial skill may lose the organization’s resources (Raadschelders, Toonen Meer, 2007). 4.) Leadership and Management Programs To ensure the success of the NSCA in Leadership and Management, several programs need implementation. First, mentorship programs need implementation in the organization. Such a program will enable staff to take part in leadership activities, directly. Managers need to provide them the opportunities to make decisions and see their effects. As a result, employees can manage lower duties, while, managers provide leadership where necessary. Short Leadership and training courses also need to implementation, in partnership with an appropriate higher learning institution. This will enable employees and managers to gain the latest information on effective leadership and management programs. As a result, employees and team leaders will gain fundamental leadership skills suited for their work environments. Managers in turn receive skills necessary in improving the organization’s productivity. 5.) Conclusion Effective leadership is a crucial aspect of public governance. It leads to enhanced management capacity and performance in public institutions such as the NSCA. The carrying out of change in Leadership and Management is paramount. If not, public service organizations will fail in reforming their service delivery. Various studies have found that there is a strong link between effective leadership in public organizations and their performance.
